Marlon Burke

Deputy General Manager, Necker Island | BVI

Biography

The Innovation Engineer

Marlon Burke was born and raised in the British Virgin Islands and studied Mechanical Engineering at Florida International University. The COVID-19 pandemic brought him home during the final year of his degree, where he returned to the family business, Burke’s Garage. After having spent summers and weekends working across every position there, he eventually became Shop Manager. While finishing his degree remotely and continuing a tutoring job he genuinely enjoyed, he decided to take on a new challenge and transitioned to Necker Island as Engineering Office Manager in 2021. Balancing these experiences allowed him to continue working with people while stepping into an entirely new world of hospitality and operations.

The work ethic instilled in him through the family business propelled him from Office Manager to Head of Engineering to Deputy General Manager. The role has also given him the opportunity to do far more than his current job title might suggest. On any given day, he may be sailing boats, climbing wind turbines, operating heavy machinery, even leading a fire team or developing unconventional guest experiences like underwater chess using scuba tanks. These experiences have helped shape a broad perspective on leadership and reinforced what he enjoys most: seeing people develop, take on new challenges, and realize what they are capable of. For him, great leadership is about creating the space for people to grow, contribute, and reach their potential.

His passion for technology and innovation continues to be fueled by projects focused on renewable energy, sustainability and animal conservation. Combining his engineering roots with a career in hospitality has provided a unique opportunity to learn from the diverse people, ideas and movements that the BVI attracts. These experiences continue to shape his belief that the BVI may be small, but there is no limit to what its people can create and the impact they can have beyond its shores.
